Noche De Ciencias 2017: A Night of Science

On March 4, 2017, Los Angeles Mission College along with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
of the Greater San Fernando Valley hosted its annual Noche De Ciencias event. With the help of
students from SHPE LAMC, SHPE CSUN, and other student volunteers the event was a huge success. The
purpose of the event is to inspire K-12 students to pursue STEM careers and inform their parents on the
college experience and how they can best support them. It was a fun filled day of hands on science
experiments designed to give students an introduction into Engineering, Physics and the Life Sciences.

Middle school students stayed on the campus center while their parents attended educational
workshops. Featured activities were Gum Drop Bridges, Straw Towers, Elephant Toothpaste, and Egg
lander. It was a challenge for students to pick the activities they wanted to do since all of them were
engaging and interesting. The workshop facilitators did an outstanding job instructing students and
explaining the scientific principles behind each exercise.

Hector Perez, a graduate of UC Berkeley who received a Phd in Engineering, served as the keynote
speaker. He inspired the crowd by sharing his life story and reminding those present that with
determination, one can accomplish their dreams.

High school students attended activities in the Center for Math and Science building. Professor Stephen
Brown conducted an informational workshop entitled “Molecules and Microbes”. Professor Richard
Rains applied physics principles to his workshop entitled “ Experiencing Speed and Acceleration with
your Body.” Dr. Valdovinos from CSUN presented his own research in the field of Biomedical. The
feedback we received for each workshop was positive. High school students rotated amongst the three
workshops and had the opportunity to engage in two interactive activities called Machine Design and
Design Challenge. At the end of the night, students were taken into the auditorium where they were
given the chance to ask questions of a STEM panel consisting of professional engineers and engineering
students. It was an energizing and highly motivating experience for all who attended. We are hoping
that more students from our local K-12 schools will chose a science pathway in the future.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers of the Greater San Fernando Valley would like to thank
everyone who made it a success and would also like to thank Los Angeles Mission College for hosting the
event year after year!

Noche de Ciencias 2015 – A Smashing Success!

ndc2015

The Main Campus Center and Center for Math and Science building were bustling with science activities on October 24, 2015 as SHPE ( Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers of the Greater San Fernando Valley ) along with the LAMC STEM program collaborated once again to organize their annual Noche De Ciencias event (Family Science Night ).  In addition, student chapters from California State University Northridge and College of the Canyons volunteered their time and efforts to make NDC 2015 a huge success! With an estimated 300 participants, it was the biggest turnout yet!

Noche De Ciencias was created to promote the sciences amongst K-12 students. Science demonstrations and experiments took place on both the Main Campus Center and Center for Math and Science Building. This year, NDC featured activities such as straw towers, straw rockets, and gum drop bridges. SHPE CSUN introduced new activities which included the Hand Grabber and Egg Drop. SHPE COC intrigued students with the Makey and Makey and Mousetrap experiments. High School students were escorted to the Center for Math and Science building where they had the opportunity to engage in life science and physics workshops hosted by Professor Brown and Professor Rains. Wesley F. Uehara from UCLA gave a talk on internship and research opportunities available to students who were thinking of attending UCLA.  It was a huge success! It inspired our students to think about the many opportunities available to them in the field of Engineering and STEM in general.  Free pizza and coffee were generously provided and those who registered early received a Noche De Ciencias T-shirt. Fabulous prizes were raffled off to the community and medals were given to students who participated in the various science competitions.

Parents had the opportunity to learn more about payment options for college and why obtaining a college education can change the lives of their children for the better. The purpose of these workshops was to prepare parents in our community on ways they can best support their children as they navigate their way through the college experience. The workshops were given in both English and Spanish. Based on parental feedback, it greatly increased their knowledge of the college system and gave them the confidence to help their children succeed.

Noche De Ciencias was exciting and inspiring for all who attended. We look forward to organizing NDC next year!

March 2015 General Body Meeting

March 2015 Speakers

March is National Women’s History Month. Every year the National Women’s History Project selects a unifying theme to be shared with all who want to promote women’s history.

This year’s theme presents the opportunity to weave women’s stories – individually and collectively – into the essential fabric of our nation’s history. Accounts of the lives of individual women are critically important because they reveal exceptionally strong role models who share a more expansive vision of what a woman can do. The stories of women’s lives, and the choices they made, encourage girls and young women to think larger and bolder, and give boys and men a fuller understanding of the female experience. Knowing women’s achievements challenges stereotypes and upends social assumptions about who women are and what women can accomplish today.

To celebrate that, we’ll be presenting two very successful Latinas and long time SHPE members, Diana Gomez & Martha Garcia.

Diana Gomez

Diana is the Central Valley Regional Director for the California High-Speed Rail Authority and has close to 25 years of experience in California transportation garnering wide experience in technical, managerial and communication areas. Most recently she was the Deputy Director of Operations for Caltrans District 7, which covers Los Angeles and Ventura Counties in Southern California.

During her tenure at Caltrans, Diana was also Chief of the Office of System Management Operations, Headquarters Division of Traffic Operations and a Senior Traffic Engineer with the Division of Traffic Operations for Caltrans District 6, headquartered in Fresno.

At Caltrans, Diana was involved in the implementation of QuickMap, which displays statewide traffic information, TMCal statewide software tool to track all activities associated with responding to incidents, and the consolidation of permit offices and reorganization of the Division of Traffic Operations in Los Angeles.

Martha Garcia

Martha is an Engineering Services Manager for Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas). She has worked in the energy industry for the past 24 years since she graduated from CSUN.

Martha has held various positions within SoCalGas including Account Executive Supervisor, Training Supervisor and Intern Supervisor and many others. She obtained her Engineering degree from Cal State Northridge and her MBA from University of Laverne.

While at CSUN, Martha was very involved with SHPE and participated extensively in the planning of the Young Latina Forum. She has been volunteering with Comision Femenil de San Fernando Valley since 1999 and has held many positions including Co-President, and Co-Treasurer.
